Why ground elder is a problem in Caernarfon
On Caernarfon properties, ground elder brittle white rhizome regrows from every fragment, so digging alone usually spreads it further through borders and hedge lines. Caernarfon sits in Gwynedd, where river corridors, railway embankments and post-industrial ground give invasive weeds like Japanese knotweed plenty of disturbed soil to colonise. Older housing with long gardens and vacant plots around the town see regular outbreaks, and infestations commonly spread along watercourses and disused rail lines into neighbouring streets.
