Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Mexborough
On Mexborough properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Mexborough's canal basin on the Dearne and Dove Canal and old glassworks sites created disturbed, damp ground along the River Don where Japanese knotweed has become established near the town's former industrial wharves.
