Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Wath upon Dearne
On Wath upon Dearne properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Wath upon Dearne's colliery legacy and canal basin on the River Dearne left disturbed spoil ground where Japanese knotweed has spread along the Dearne Valley trail and former railway sidings surrounding the old market town.
