Why marestail is a problem in Aberystwyth
On Aberystwyth properties, marestail deep rhizome network makes it one of the hardest weeds to shift from gardens, allotments and new-build plots. Aberystwyth sits in Ceredigion, where river corridors, railway embankments and post-industrial ground give invasive weeds like Japanese knotweed plenty of disturbed soil to colonise. Older housing with long gardens and vacant plots around the town see regular outbreaks, and infestations commonly spread along watercourses and disused rail lines into neighbouring streets.
