Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Rhyl
On Rhyl properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Rhyl's coastal drainage channels and River Clwyd estuary, alongside old railway sidings serving the seaside resort, left disturbed ground where Japanese knotweed has spread along the harbourside and marsh margins.
