Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Maesteg
On Maesteg properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Maesteg sits at the head of the Llynfi valley, where former colliery land and the River Llynfi's disturbed banks keep knotweed active from Caerau down to the Afan confluence at Cymmer.
