Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Tamworth
On Tamworth properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Tamworth lies at the confluence of the Rivers Tame and Anker, with old colliery spoil and railway embankments along the West Coast Main Line providing the disturbed, damp ground that Japanese knotweed favours around the historic castle grounds.
