Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Walsall
On Walsall properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Walsall's leather tanning industry left contaminated brownfield sites near the River Tame, where knotweed has established alongside the Walsall Canal, spreading into nearby arboretum grounds and parks.
