Why stinging nettles is a problem in Newcastle upon Tyne
On Newcastle upon Tyne properties, stinging nettles colonise nutrient-rich and disturbed ground, making verges, play areas and yard margins unusable within a season. Newcastle's shipbuilding yards and colliery staithes along the River Tyne left extensive disturbed quayside and railway land where Japanese knotweed has spread along the Ouseburn valley and former industrial riverbanks.
