Why yellow azalea is a problem in Peterlee
On Peterlee properties, yellow azalea suckers into dense thickets on heathland, woodland edges and large gardens, shading out ground flora. Peterlee sits in County Durham, where river corridors, railway embankments and post-industrial ground give invasive weeds like Japanese knotweed plenty of disturbed soil to colonise. Older housing with long gardens and vacant plots around the town see regular outbreaks, and infestations commonly spread along watercourses and disused rail lines into neighbouring streets.
