Why the myths persist
Japanese knotweed removal sits at an unusual intersection of ecology, conveyancing and construction, which makes it easy for a homeowner to be quoted confidently and incorrectly. A cheap spray quote wins the job on price, an aggressive excavation quote wins it on fear of a mortgage falling through, and both can leave a customer paying more overall than a properly scoped herbicide or hybrid programme would have cost. The honest answer almost always depends on stand size, rhizome spread, site access and what any buyer's lender will actually require.
What the real cost bands look like
As a rough guide across the UK market: a herbicide-only programme for a small to medium stand typically runs £1,500 to £3,500 over two to three seasons; a hybrid approach combining partial excavation with follow-up herbicide starts from around £4,000 where faster results are needed for a sale; and full excavation, the most disruptive and expensive option, starts from £8,000 and is usually reserved for sites where knotweed is close to a structure or a very tight completion date rules out a multi-season herbicide programme. Any quote well outside these bands, in either direction, is worth questioning.
