Why cherry laurel is a problem in Richmond upon Thames
On Richmond upon Thames properties, cherry laurel self-sows through woodland, hedgerows and large gardens, forming deep shade that kills ground flora. Richmond upon Thames sits in Greater London, where river corridors, railway embankments and post-industrial ground give invasive weeds like Japanese knotweed plenty of disturbed soil to colonise. Older housing with long gardens and vacant plots around the town see regular outbreaks, and infestations commonly spread along watercourses and disused rail lines into neighbouring streets.
