Why cherry laurel is a problem in Margate
On Margate properties, cherry laurel self-sows through woodland, hedgerows and large gardens, forming deep shade that kills ground flora. Around the Turner Contemporary and the old town, Margate's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across Kent.
