Why cherry laurel is a problem in Bandon
On Bandon properties, cherry laurel self-sows through woodland, hedgerows and large gardens, forming deep shade that kills ground flora. In Bandon, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Bandon River and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Kilbrittain coast and Innishannon woods, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Innishannon and Kinsale, are where we most often find established stands.
