Why couch grass is a problem in Kirkby
On Kirkby properties, couch grass sharp white rhizomes run through borders, lawns and vegetable plots, regrowing from every broken fragment. Around the town centre and the industrial estate, Kirkby's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across Merseyside.
