Why giant hogweed is a problem in Portishead
On Portishead properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Portishead's former dockland and disused power station site along the Bristol Channel shoreline left extensive disturbed brownfield land, which knotweed has colonised alongside the old railway trackbed.
