Why giant hogweed is a problem in Crowborough
On Crowborough properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Crowborough's elevated position on the Ashdown Forest sandstone ridge means knotweed tends to concentrate around disturbed verges and the old railway cutting, as well as streams draining towards the River Medway headwaters.
