Why giant hogweed is a problem in Colchester
On Colchester properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. As Britain's oldest recorded town, Colchester's Roman walls, former garrison land and the River Colne towpaths provide disturbed ground where knotweed rhizomes have spread unchecked through allotments and old railway cuttings.
