Why giant hogweed is a problem in Merthyr Tydfil
On Merthyr Tydfil properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Merthyr Tydfil's ironworking heritage left vast disturbed spoil tips and slag heaps across the valley, and these, together with the River Taff's banks, remain a stronghold for Japanese knotweed.
