Why ground elder is a problem in Clonmel
On Clonmel properties, ground elder brittle white rhizome regrows from every fragment, so digging alone usually spreads it further through borders and hedge lines. In Clonmel, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the River Suir and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Gashouse Bridge and Comeragh foothills, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Kilsheelan and Ardfinnan, are where we most often find established stands.
