Why groundsel is a problem in Mallow
On Mallow properties, groundsel completes several generations a year, so a small patch becomes a season-long seed source across beds and gravel. In Mallow, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the River Blackwater and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Mallow Castle and Nagle Mountains, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Buttevant and Doneraile, are where we most often find established stands.
