Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Altrincham
On Altrincham properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Around the market house and the Stamford Quarter, Altrincham's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across Greater Manchester.
