Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Newcastle Emlyn
On Newcastle Emlyn properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Around the castle ruins and the River Teifi, Newcastle Emlyn's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across South Wales.
