Why horsetail is a problem in Wicklow
On Wicklow properties, horsetail roots reach two metres down, shrug off most garden weedkillers and push up through lawns, borders and block paving year after year. In Wicklow, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Vartry River and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Broad Lough and Wicklow Head, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Rathnew and Ashford, are where we most often find established stands.
