Why horsetail is a problem in Ennis
On Ennis properties, horsetail roots reach two metres down, shrug off most garden weedkillers and push up through lawns, borders and block paving year after year. In Ennis, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the River Fergus and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Ennis Friary and Lees Road woods, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Clarecastle and Quin, are where we most often find established stands.
