On Welwyn Garden City properties, ragwort poisonous to horses and cattle, and liver damage accumulates whether the plant is grazed fresh or baled into hay. Welwyn Garden City's original industrial estates and the River Lea and River Mimram, which pass close to the town, have all contributed to established knotweed colonies on disturbed brownfield land nearby.
