Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Macclesfield
On Macclesfield properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Macclesfield's former silk mills along the River Bollin and Macclesfield Canal left disturbed millponds and weirs where Japanese knotweed has taken hold, particularly on the steep, damp banks below the old mill complexes.
