Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Taunton
On Taunton properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Taunton's floodplain along the River Tone and the old Bridgwater and Taunton Canal have provided disturbed, damp corridors where Japanese knotweed thrives, spread further by railway embankments near Taunton station.
