Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Abergavenny
On Abergavenny properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Abergavenny's position at the Usk gap, with former railway and canal land around the town, gives knotweed disturbed corridors along the riverbank and onto the lower slopes of the Sugar Loaf.
