Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Penarth
On Penarth properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Penarth's Victorian seafront and Cardiff Bay interface sit on disturbed reclamation ground, and the old Penarth dock and railway siding beds remain a recurring source of knotweed along the foreshore.
