Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Birmingham
On Birmingham properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Birmingham's dense network of canals, built during the industrial revolution, along with derelict factory sites in Digbeth and old railway sidings, has created ideal conditions for knotweed to spread citywide.
