Why stinging nettles is a problem in Carrickfergus
On Carrickfergus properties, stinging nettles colonise nutrient-rich and disturbed ground, making verges, play areas and yard margins unusable within a season. In Carrickfergus, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Belfast Lough and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Carrickfergus Castle and Woodburn Forest, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Greenisland and Whitehead, are where we most often find established stands.
