Why burdock is a problem in Wicklow
On Wicklow properties, burdock deep taproot and burred seed heads that catch in livestock coats, fencing and machinery on paddocks and field margins. In Wicklow, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Vartry River and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Broad Lough and Wicklow Head, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Rathnew and Ashford, are where we most often find established stands.
