Why couch grass is a problem in Newcastle upon Tyne
On Newcastle upon Tyne properties, couch grass white underground stems run right through borders, lawns and vegetable plots, regrowing from every broken piece. Newcastle's shipbuilding yards and colliery staithes along the River Tyne left extensive disturbed quayside and railway land where Japanese knotweed has spread along the Ouseburn valley and former industrial riverbanks.
