Why giant hogweed is a problem in Fleet
On Fleet properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Around Fleet Pond and the high street, Fleet's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across Hampshire.
