Why giant hogweed is a problem in Retford
On Retford properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Retford's riverside market square by the River Idle and old Chesterfield Canal spur left disturbed towpath and railway embankment ground where Japanese knotweed has spread through the town's former industrial fringes.
