Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Retford
On Retford properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Retford's riverside market square by the River Idle and old Chesterfield Canal spur left disturbed towpath and railway embankment ground where Japanese knotweed has spread through the town's former industrial fringes.
