Why giant hogweed is a problem in Glastonbury
On Glastonbury properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Glastonbury's low-lying Somerset Levels, criss-crossed by disturbed drainage rhynes and old peat diggings, have provided ideal damp conditions for knotweed to spread across the town's outskirts.
