Why giant hogweed is a problem in Devizes
On Devizes properties, giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns and long-term light sensitivity, which makes it a genuine safety issue on footpaths, riverbanks and school boundaries. Devizes' position on the Kennet and Avon Canal, with its famous flight of 29 locks, has left disturbed towpath verges where knotweed spreads through former wharf sites and canal-side warehouses.
