Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Craigavon
On Craigavon properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. In Craigavon, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Craigavon Lakes and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around River Bann and Oxford Island, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Portadown and Lurgan, are where we most often find established stands.
