Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Ebbw Vale
On Ebbw Vale properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Ebbw Vale's former steelworks left extensive disturbed spoil land throughout the valley, and the River Ebbw's disturbed banks continue to give Japanese knotweed a strong foothold across the town.
