Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Ebbw Vale
On Ebbw Vale properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Ebbw Vale's former steelworks left extensive disturbed spoil land throughout the valley, and the River Ebbw's disturbed banks continue to give Japanese knotweed a strong foothold across the town.
