Why Japanese knotweed is a problem in Inverurie
On Inverurie properties, Japanese knotweed rhizome spreads several metres underground, exploits cracks in hard standing and drains, and can stall a mortgage offer or sale. Inverurie sits in Aberdeenshire, where river corridors, railway embankments and post-industrial ground give invasive weeds like Japanese knotweed plenty of disturbed soil to colonise. Older housing with long gardens and vacant plots around the town see regular outbreaks, and infestations commonly spread along watercourses and disused rail lines into neighbouring streets.

How we treat Japanese knotweed in Inverurie
Treatment method
We use a three to five year stem-injection and foliar herbicide programme, or hybrid and full excavation with licensed off-site disposal where timescales are tight.
Best timing
Most effective late summer to early autumn, when the plant draws herbicide down into the rhizome.
Your legal position
Listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 — allowing it to spread to neighbouring land can bring a civil claim, and the cut material is controlled waste.
Local coverage
Inverurie and nearby Kemnay, Kintore, Oldmeldrum.
