Why Japanese knotweed is a problem in Pontardawe
On Pontardawe properties, Japanese knotweed rhizome spreads several metres underground, exploits cracks in hard standing and drains, and can stall a mortgage offer or sale. Pontardawe sits on the River Tawe north of Swansea, where the riverbank and Swansea Canal are well-known balsam and knotweed corridors.

How we treat Japanese knotweed in Pontardawe
Treatment method
We use a three to five year stem-injection and foliar herbicide programme, or hybrid and full excavation with licensed off-site disposal where timescales are tight.
Best timing
Most effective late summer to early autumn, when the plant draws herbicide down into the rhizome.
Your legal position
Listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 — allowing it to spread to neighbouring land can bring a civil claim, and the cut material is controlled waste.
Local coverage
