Why montbretia is a problem in Dungarvan
On Dungarvan properties, montbretia corm chains multiply underground and spread along verges, hedgebanks and stream sides, excluding native plants. In Dungarvan, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the Colligan River and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Dungarvan Bay and Comeragh Mountains, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Abbeyside and Ring, are where we most often find established stands.
