Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Caernarfon
On Caernarfon properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Caernarfon's harbourside slate wharves and former railway lines along the Menai Strait left disturbed quayside ground where Japanese knotweed has spread through the old dock area and Seiont riverbanks near the castle.
