Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Caernarfon
On Caernarfon properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Caernarfon's harbourside slate wharves and former railway lines along the Menai Strait left disturbed quayside ground where Japanese knotweed has spread through the old dock area and Seiont riverbanks near the castle.
