Why montbretia is a problem in Strabane
On Strabane properties, montbretia corm chains multiply underground and spread along verges, hedgebanks and stream sides, excluding native plants. In Strabane, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the River Mourne and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around River Foyle and Sion Mills, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Sion Mills and Artigarvan, are where we most often find established stands.
