Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Caerphilly
On Caerphilly properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Caerphilly's disturbed ground around its historic castle moat and former colliery sites nearby has allowed knotweed to establish, with further spread along the Rhymney River valley's old rail lines.
