Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Tiverton
On Tiverton properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Tiverton's wool trade heritage along the River Exe and Grand Western Canal has left disused mill sites where knotweed spreads through the canal towpath's disturbed banks and old lace factory grounds.
